President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renaming of a university in Bauchi State after the late Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, in recognition of his enduring contributions to Islamic education, scholarship, and national unity.
The announcement was made as part of efforts to immortalize the renowned cleric, who was widely respected across Nigeria and beyond for his dedication to Islamic propagation, peaceful coexistence, and moral guidance. The institution will now bear the name Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi University, replacing its former designation.
Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, who passed away in 2024 at the age of 93, was a towering figure in Islamic scholarship and a leading voice of the Tijjaniyya Sufi order. Over several decades, he established numerous Islamic schools, mentored thousands of students, and played a key role in promoting religious tolerance and social harmony across the country.
According to the Presidency, the renaming is part of President Tinubu’s broader commitment to honoring distinguished Nigerians whose lives and works have positively shaped the nation’s moral, educational, and cultural landscape.
Reactions to the announcement have been largely positive, particularly from religious leaders, scholars, and residents of Bauchi State, who described the gesture as a fitting tribute to a man whose influence transcended religious and regional boundaries.
The federal government stated that the renaming would not affect the academic structure of the university, but would instead serve as a lasting reminder of Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi’s legacy of knowledge, discipline, and service to humanity.
