The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may face possible disqualification in the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections following unresolved internal leadership disputes, while the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reportedly excluded the Labour Party (LP) from the ballot.
According to electoral sources, the PDP’s predicament is linked to ongoing factional crises within the party, which have allegedly affected the legitimacy of its candidates’ submissions. INEC guidelines require political parties to present candidates endorsed by duly recognized party leadership, a condition the PDP is said to be struggling to meet in the FCT.
Meanwhile, the Labour Party has reportedly been completely excluded from the ballot after failing to meet statutory requirements, including issues bordering on candidate nomination procedures and compliance with electoral timelines.
INEC officials were said to have communicated the decisions to affected parties in line with provisions of the Electoral Act, although the commission has yet to issue a detailed public statement clarifying the exclusions and potential disqualifications.
Political observers say the development could significantly reshape the political contest in the FCT, traditionally regarded as a highly competitive territory due to its diverse voter base.
Party officials from both the PDP and Labour Party are reportedly exploring legal and administrative options to challenge INEC’s actions, insisting that their candidates were validly nominated.
