The Governor of Adamawa State has granted a pardon to a farmer who was previously sentenced to death for killing a herdsman during a violent confrontation on his farm.
The farmer was convicted after an incident in which he reportedly acted in self-defence when the herdsman attempted to kill him during a dispute over farmland. The case had drawn widespread public attention, with civil society groups and rights advocates calling for clemency, arguing that the killing occurred under extreme threat to life.
Announcing the pardon, the state government said the decision followed a careful review of the circumstances surrounding the case, recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, and considerations of justice, equity and public interest.
The governor emphasized that the pardon does not encourage violence but reflects the state’s commitment to fairness, especially in cases involving self-defence. He also reiterated the need for peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders, urging communities to embrace dialogue and lawful means of resolving disputes.
The development has been welcomed by many residents and advocacy groups, who described it as a humane decision and a step toward addressing long-standing tensions between farmers and herders in the state.
