The Federal Government has reportedly uncovered ₦288 billion in financial irregularities linked to the tenure of a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmoud Yakubu.
According to sources familiar with the development, the alleged irregularities were identified during a review and audit of financial records covering expenditures and procurement processes carried out under the previous leadership of the electoral body. The findings have raised fresh concerns over accountability and financial management within public institutions.
Officials said the flagged amount relates to transactions and contracts that are yet to be fully justified, prompting calls for further investigation to determine whether due process was followed. The government is expected to forward the audit report to relevant anti-corruption agencies for detailed scrutiny.
While details of the audit have not been fully made public, the development has sparked reactions from political stakeholders and civil society groups, many of whom are calling for a transparent investigation to establish the facts and ensure accountability.
As of the time of filing this report, Professor Yakubu has not publicly responded to the allegations. There has also been no official confirmation of any indictment, as investigations are said to be ongoing.
The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening transparency and combating financial misconduct, stressing that no individual is above the law, regardless of position or past office held.
