Six governorship aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yobe State have rejected the reported adoption of former Secretary to the State Government, Baba Mallam Wali, as the party’s consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 elections.

The aspirants described the move as undemocratic and contrary to the principles of internal party democracy, insisting that no individual should be imposed on party members ahead of the governorship primaries.

In a joint position reportedly issued after political consultations within the party, the aggrieved aspirants maintained that all interested contenders should be allowed to test their popularity through a transparent and credible primary election process.

They argued that attempts to present Wali as a consensus candidate risk creating division within the APC in Yobe State and could weaken party unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The aspirants also called on the party leadership at both the state and national levels to remain neutral and ensure a level playing field for all contestants seeking the APC governorship ticket.

The controversy comes amid increasing political permutations in Yobe State over who may succeed the current administration when the tenure of Governor Mai Mala Buni comes to an end.

While supporters of Wali reportedly view him as an experienced administrator capable of sustaining the APC’s dominance in the state, critics insist the governorship race should remain open to all qualified aspirants within the party.

The APC leadership in Yobe State has yet to issue an official statement on the disagreement among the aspirants.
