Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has described her years in the National Assembly as a period when the Senate operated at its peak, saying she served during what she called the institution’s “best” era.

 Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has described her years in the National Assembly as a period when the Senate operated at its peak, saying she served during what she called the institution’s “best” era.

Speaking at a public event, Oluremi Tinubu reflected on her experience as a senator in the 7th, 8th and 9th Assemblies, describing the period as “really good” and marked by robust legislative engagement and mutual respect among lawmakers.

The First Lady represented Lagos Central Senatorial District from 2011 to 2023 before leaving the Senate following the emergence of her husband, President Bola Tinubu, as Nigeria’s president.

Her remarks have since generated political commentary, with many Nigerians comparing the previous assemblies to the current 10th Senate under Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Some political observers interpreted her comments as praise for the legislative culture of past assemblies, while others viewed them as an indirect criticism of the current National Assembly, which has faced accusations from critics of being less confrontational toward the executive arm of government.

Supporters of the present Senate, however, argue that cooperation between the executive and legislature is necessary for political stability and effective governance.

Oluremi Tinubu remains one of Nigeria’s most prominent female politicians, having built a long political career both as senator and now as First Lady.
