The Nigerian Presidency on Sunday sparked controversy after sharing an image purporting to show President Bola Tinubu in a meeting with Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Paris, which was later flagged on X (formerly Twitter) as being generated by artificial intelligence.
The image, posted on President Tinubu’s verified X account and reposted by some presidential aides, showed the two African leaders seated at what was described as a private lunch in the French capital. However, users on X quickly noted a visible watermark linked to Grok, an artificial intelligence tool developed by xAI, raising questions about the authenticity of the photograph
An X community note attached to the post stated that while reports indicated that a meeting between both leaders did take place, the image itself appeared to be AI-generated. The development triggered widespread reactions online, with critics questioning why an artificial image was used for official presidential communication, particularly on a matter involving international diplomacy
According to reports, the Presidency has not formally explained why an AI-generated or AI-enhanced image was shared, nor has it released an original photograph from the reported meeting. Notably, no corresponding post or image of the meeting appeared on President Kagame’s verified X account as of the time of reporting
