Former US President Donald Trump has sparked controversy after the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was renamed the “Trump-Kennedy Center” following a vote by its board of trustees.
The decision, announced by the White House, followed a meeting of the Kennedy Center board, the majority of whom were appointed by Trump. According to officials, the board approved adding Trump’s name to the iconic arts institution in recognition of what they described as his role in supporting renovations and reforms at the centre.
Reacting to the development, Trump said he was honoured by the decision, describing it as an unexpected gesture. The new name has already begun appearing on some official materials and branding linked to the arts centre.
However, the move has generated strong backlash from critics, including lawmakers, cultural figures and members of the Kennedy family. Opponents argue that the Kennedy Center was established by an Act of Congress in 1964 to honour former President John F. Kennedy, and that any formal renaming should require congressional approval.
