Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has called on the Federal Government to publish the full details of the Nigeria–France tax administration memorandum of understanding (MoU), citing growing public concern over the agreement.
Obi made the call following the signing of the MoU on December 10 by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and France’s Direction Gรฉnรฉrale des Finances Publiques (DGFiP), an agreement aimed at promoting efficient tax administration between both countries.
In a statement, Obi stressed that international collaborations involving tax administration, revenue systems, and data management require a high level of transparency, given their direct impact on citizens and public trust.
According to him, it is troubling that an agreement of such importance appears to have been concluded without making its full terms public or clearly explaining its objectives, scope, and expected outcomes to Nigerians.
“It is therefore worrisome that an agreement of this significance appears to have been concluded without the full terms being made public, and without a clear effort to explain its objectives, scope, and expected outcomes to Nigerians,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor noted that openness in fiscal agreements is critical to accountability and confidence in governance, especially at a time when Nigerians are increasingly sensitive to issues affecting taxation and public revenue management.
As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Government and the FIRS have not issued a detailed public response to Obi’s call.
