The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced that the National Identification Number (NIN) will automatically serve as the Tax Identification Number (TIN) for individual Nigerians starting from 2026.
FIRS Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, disclosed this as part of ongoing reforms aimed at simplifying tax administration, expanding the tax net, and improving compliance across the country. Under the new framework, individuals will no longer be required to register separately for a TIN, as their NIN will function as their unique tax identifier.
Similarly, the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number will be used as the TIN for businesses and corporate entities, eliminating duplication in identity and tax records.
According to FIRS, the policy aligns with the Federal Government’s digitalisation agenda and is designed to enhance efficiency, transparency, and data integration among government agencies. The agency noted that linking tax records to NIN and CAC numbers would reduce tax evasion, improve revenue collection, and make it easier for taxpayers to meet their obligations.
FIRS assured Nigerians that adequate sensitisation, system upgrades, and stakeholder engagement would be carried out ahead of the 2026 implementation to ensure a smooth transition.
The move has been described as a major step toward modernising Nigeria’s tax system and strengthening domestic revenue mobilisation.
