Former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has raised concerns over his continued detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), despite reportedly meeting bail conditions granted by a competent court.
Malami, through his legal representatives, decried what he described as a disregard for the rule of law, insisting that his prolonged custody violates his constitutional rights. He urged the anti-graft agency to respect judicial orders while pursuing its investigation.
The EFCC, however, is said to be finalising arrangements to arraign the former justice minister over allegations bordering on money laundering and abuse of office. Sources within the commission disclosed that charges have been prepared and would be filed before a Federal High Court in the coming days.
While the anti-corruption agency has yet to issue an official statement on the matter, it is understood that the EFCC maintains that Malami’s detention is lawful and necessary to conclude ongoing investigations.
The development has sparked renewed debate among legal experts and civil society groups over the balance between anti-corruption efforts and adherence to due process.
As of the time of filing this report, Malami’s legal team says it is considering further legal action to enforce the bail order.
