Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has accused the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of intimidation and abuse of office.
Malami made the allegation amid ongoing investigations and public scrutiny involving officials of the previous administration, claiming that the actions of the anti-graft agency were aimed at harassment rather than the pursuit of justice. He alleged that the EFCC leadership was using its powers to intimidate political opponents and settle scores, rather than conduct impartial investigations.
According to Malami, due process and the rule of law must be upheld in all anti-corruption efforts, warning that intimidation tactics could undermine public confidence in the EFCC and Nigeria’s justice system. He maintained that no individual should be subjected to persecution under the guise of fighting corruption.
The EFCC, however, has consistently maintained that its operations are guided strictly by the law, insisting that investigations are based on evidence and not influenced by political considerations.
The accusation has sparked fresh debate over the independence of anti-corruption agencies and the balance between accountability and alleged political intimidation, with calls from legal experts and civil society groups for transparency and adherence to due process in all investigations.
