Bandit Leader Turji Admits Zamfara Peace Talks, Denies ₦30 Million Payoff

Gusau, Nigeria — Notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has confirmed that he participated in peace talks with the Zamfara State government during the administration of former governor Bello Matawalle, while firmly denying allegations that he received a ₦30 million payoff as part of the negotiations.

Speaking through associates and local mediators, Turji said the discussions were aimed at reducing violence and restoring calm in parts of Zamfara State that had been plagued by years of banditry, kidnappings, and deadly attacks. He described the talks as exploratory efforts rather than a financial settlement.

Reports circulating in recent weeks had alleged that Turji and other armed leaders were paid large sums of money by the state government in exchange for laying down arms. Turji rejected those claims, insisting that no such payment was made to him and calling the allegations an attempt to discredit the dialogue process.

Zamfara State has been one of the regions hardest hit by armed banditry in northwestern Nigeria, with thousands killed and displaced. Past administrations pursued a mix of military operations and dialogue initiatives to stem the violence, with mixed results.

Security analysts say Turji’s admission highlights the complexity of negotiating with armed groups, as authorities balance peace efforts with public demands for accountability and justice. The current status of any talks remains unclear, as security operations against bandit groups continue across the state.
