The leadership of Nawfia community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State has announced the suspension of its major annual festival following a spate of fatal gun attacks in the area.
In a statement released by community leaders, the decision was taken to prevent further loss of lives and safeguard residents and visitors amid the prevailing security concerns. The leadership said the attacks, which have claimed several lives in recent weeks, have created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty, making it unsafe to hold large public gatherings.
According to the statement, the festival—usually a period of cultural celebration and homecoming—has been put on hold until the security situation improves. The community expressed deep regret over the suspension but stressed that the safety of lives must take precedence over cultural festivities.
“We cannot afford to expose our people to danger,” the leadership said. “The suspension of this year’s festival is a painful but necessary decision to protect lives in the face of these senseless attacks.”
The Nawfia community also called on security agencies to intensify patrols and investigations to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attacks. Residents were urged to remain vigilant, cooperate with security operatives, and promptly report suspicious movements.
While appealing for calm, the leadership assured that the festival would be rescheduled once peace and security are fully restored, reaffirming the community’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage under safe conditions.
The development comes amid growing concerns over security challenges in parts of Anambra State, with community leaders increasingly taking precautionary measures to protect lives and property.
