Why Buhari Was Called Mai Gaskiya — Adesina Marks Buhari’s Posthumous 83rd Birthday

Former presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, has marked what would have been the 83rd birthday of late President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader whose life was defined by discipline, frugality, and uncommon integrity.

Adesina said Buhari earned the title Mai Gaskiya—meaning “the honest one”—due to his consistent refusal to interfere in official matters for personal or political favors, even while holding powerful public offices.

He cited testimonies from senior government officials, including former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, who reportedly attested that Buhari never touched public funds nor pressured officials for personal gain.

According to Adesina, such accounts reinforce Buhari’s long-standing reputation as a leader who lived by strict personal ethics and accountability, setting him apart in Nigeria’s political history.

The tribute has generated reactions across social media, with supporters recalling Buhari’s anti-corruption stance and personal lifestyle, while others continue to debate his broader legacy as president.
