Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised attempts to celebrate former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing such actions as an insult to Nigerians.
Sowore made the remarks in a Facebook post, where he said Nigerians are still reeling from the consequences of Buhari’s administration, which he accused of being marked by mass killings, corruption, bigotry, and widespread incompetence.
According to him, those who lived through the former president’s tenure understand the depth of the suffering inflicted on the country, adding that glorifying Buhari’s legacy at this time is insensitive and offensive to citizens still struggling to recover.
He noted that Nigeria remains burdened by insecurity, economic hardship, and institutional decay, arguing that celebrating Buhari’s record amounts to “adding insult to injury.”
Sowore concluded that attempts to rewrite history or portray the former president in a positive light undermine the pain and losses endured by millions of Nigerians during that period.
