The Senior Pastor of Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC), Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, has expressed doubts about the electoral prospects of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, in Nigeria’s northern region ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Pastor Ashimolowo made the remarks while speaking during a recent sermon, where he discussed national politics and emerging permutations ahead of the next general elections. According to him, winning the presidency requires broad national appeal, particularly strong acceptance across the North, which remains a critical voting bloc in Nigeria’s electoral process.
The cleric questioned Obi’s political reach in the region, noting that electoral success in Nigeria depends not only on popularity in certain zones but also on the ability to build strong alliances and grassroots support nationwide.
While acknowledging Peter Obi’s popularity among sections of the electorate, especially in the South and among young voters, Ashimolowo suggested that the former governor may face significant challenges in securing enough support in the North to mount a successful presidential bid.
Peter Obi, who was the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, has not formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 election. However, his political future continues to attract public attention and debate.
As political activities gradually intensify ahead of 2027, comments such as Ashimolowo’s have continued to fuel discussions around regional voting patterns, coalition-building, and the prospects of major political figures in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
