Amid rising economic hardship, a community in Akwa Ibom State has approved a significant reduction in marriage and burial fees to ease the financial burden on residents.
Community leaders announced the decision after consultations with elders, youth groups, and women leaders, noting that many families were struggling to meet traditional financial requirements due to the current economic climate. According to them, the high cost of marriage and burial rites had become a major source of concern, forcing some residents into debt or delaying important life events.
Under the new arrangement, charges associated with traditional marriage rites, including levies and customary payments, have been reviewed downward. Burial-related fees, which often include payments to community groups and age grades, have also been reduced to make funeral arrangements more affordable.
Community representatives explained that the move was driven by compassion and the need to promote social stability, adding that cultural practices should not worsen the suffering of the people.
Residents have welcomed the decision, describing it as timely and humane, while urging other communities facing similar challenges to consider reviewing their traditional fees in response to prevailing economic realities.
The leadership emphasized that the adjustment does not diminish cultural values but reflects a collective commitment to supporting one another during difficult times.
