A secondary school teacher in Ekiti State has appealed to the public and relevant authorities for assistance after allegedly losing both kidneys following a medical procedure at a teaching hospital in the state.
The teacher, whose identity is being withheld for privacy reasons, said he was admitted to the hospital for treatment but later discovered that both of his kidneys had been removed without his informed consent. According to him, the development has left him in critical health condition, dependent on constant medical care and facing severe financial hardship.
Speaking from his sickbed, the teacher described his ordeal as traumatic, saying his life has been drastically altered by the incident. He appealed to the Ekiti State Government, medical regulatory bodies, and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene, investigate the circumstances surrounding the surgery, and support him with funds for urgent medical treatment.
Family members said the victim can no longer work due to his condition and now requires regular dialysis to survive. They expressed concern over the rising cost of treatment and the emotional toll the situation has taken on the family.
Human rights advocates have also called for a thorough investigation into the allegation, stressing that if proven, the act would amount to gross medical negligence and a serious violation of medical ethics and patients’ rights.
As of the time of filing this report, the management of the teaching hospital had not issued an official statement addressing the allegation.
The case has sparked public concern and renewed calls for stricter oversight of medical practices in public health institutions, as Nigerians await clarification and accountability from relevant authorities.
