Court Bars Ex-Abia Commissioner From Posting Against Gov. Otti Over ₦100bn Defamation Suit

A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court has issued an interlocutory injunction restraining a former Abia State Commissioner for Information, Barr. Eze Chikamnayo, from making or publishing any statements against Governor Alex Chioma Otti pending the determination of a ₦100 billion defamation suit.

The order was granted by Justice J.E. Obanor, who directed Chikamnayo to immediately stop writing, sharing, circulating, broadcasting or syndicating any content considered defamatory about the governor on social media platforms or through traditional media outlets. The restriction covers platforms such as Facebook, X, Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram, TikTok, as well as newspapers, radio and television.

The court’s decision followed an application by Governor Otti, who alleged that the former commissioner published a series of offensive and defamatory posts against him, even after being served with court processes. The governor argued that the continued publications could cause irreparable damage to his reputation and interfere with the ongoing judicial process.

In granting the application, the court held that maintaining the status quo was necessary to protect the integrity of the case and prevent actions capable of prejudicing the proceedings. The injunction will remain in force until the substantive suit is heard and determined.

Governor Otti is seeking ₦100 billion in damages for alleged reputational harm, alongside public apologies and a perpetual injunction restraining further defamatory publications. The court has adjourned the matter to January 19, 2026, for further hearing.

The ruling underscores the judiciary’s position on the need for restraint in public commentary when matters are before the court.
